The story takes place in Congo, at the end of XIX century. It narrates the story of Marlow, a British sailor who went to Congo to work for a commercial company. He is assigned to travel up the river, in the interior land, towards a far station of the company, managed with wild methods by a man who made himself worshipped by a tribe of savages. The novella has been adapted for the screen numerous times, including a famous Francis Ford Coppola's retelling: the movie «Apocalypse Now».
